From Lake Tekapo, an hour’s drive will get you to Lake Pukaki on the way to either Mt Cook or Wanaka. Have you heard of it before?
Lake Pukaki: Stunning Views of Mt Cook

I would say it isn’t as popular as Lake Tekapo. However, the view from Lake Pukaki is just as breathtaking. The combination of Mt Cook and the lake is truly impressive.
Mt Cook Alpine Salmon: Fresh King Salmon by the Lake

As you might know, this area is ideal for raising high-quality king salmon thanks to its clean water. You can savour it here.
You can find a shop, Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, near the lake that sells fresh sashimi, smoked salmon and more. You’ll find the salmon incredibly tender and delicious, so it’s worth a try!
The shop looks like a café, with benches outside where you can sit and enjoy the scenery. I bought some king salmon there and enjoyed it with a cup of coffee while looking out over Lake Pukaki.

It’s a truly luxurious moment, sipping a cup of coffee and savouring king salmon while appreciating the stunning scenery of Lake Pukaki with Mt Cook in the background.
This lake isn’t just a place to drive past. You need to stop by, relax and admire the view before your long journey ahead!
Lake Pukaki is a great place to stop on the way to Mt Cook. I also explored the Hooker Valley Track, which I’ve written about in another post.
