Did you know the Gondola Summit Station offers one of the highest viewpoints overlooking Christchurch? From there, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the entire city.
There are two ways to approach the summit.
One is to board the gondola, and the other is to trek the Bridle Path. I chose to take the path in order to enjoy scenic views along the way.
When I finally reached the top, I felt satisfied. Let me share what the trip was like and the views I experienced.
Christchurch Gondola: Why I Chose to Hike Instead
This is the Gondola Station where you can purchase a ticket and board the gondola. It’s accessible by bus from the city.
The ticket cost $44 at the time of my visit, which I found pretty expensive.
So I gave up on getting on it and decided to hike the Bridle Path instead.

The Bridle Path: A Steep Climb with Stunning Views
The Bridle Path was the main route connecting the port town of Lyttelton with Christchurch. It seems that it has been used since 1850.
The trail was so steep and slippery, with loose stones, that I got tired quickly and needed to catch my breath. The jagged hillside and the view of the city from the path were picturesque.
It took me around 40 minutes to get to the top. The peaceful vista from there was a reward for the hike.
Gondola Summit Station: The Reward After 70 Minutes of Hiking
From the summit, there’s a path leading up to the gondola station. By this point, I had run out of strength but pushed myself to keep walking for another half an hour to reach my goal.
So, it took me about 70 minutes in total to reach the Gondola Summit Station via the Bridle Path.
When I finally arrived, I was blown away by the epic view. The fresh air felt as though it was celebrating my achievement. I couldn’t help gazing at the view of the city, mountains and coastline. What an eye-opener!
There’s a souvenir shop and a café where you can relax after climbing. I was going to take the gondola back down to the base. However, I wasn’t able to find the ticket counter, so I had to walk back down the trail.
What a pain in the neck!
Is Hiking the Bridle Path Worth It?
I highly recommend making time to visit this place at least once!!
Honestly, I don’t think it was worth paying for the gondola in my case. I found it better to work up a sweat hiking the trail while looking out over the beautiful city and nature.
