As you probably know, Lake Tekapo is renowned as one of the best places to stargaze in the world, sitting in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. It takes about two and a half hours to get here from Christchurch by car. That pulls in stargazers from all over the world. I was one of them.
Around the lake, light pollution is strictly controlled to keep the skies dark enough for the stars to shine as brightly as possible.
While most people associate Lake Tekapo with its dreamy night-time views, it is just as stunning during the day and in the afternoon.
Lake Tekapo During the Day
In daylight, the lake sparkles in a pure, deep blue as it reflects the sunlight. Mt Cook stands tall in the background, creating a mesmerising view.
After sunset, the scenery shifts. The sky displays a blend of soft pink and light green, creating a different, calm atmosphere. I was impressed!
The Church of the Good Shepherd
I found the Church of the Good Shepherd perfectly positioned to stand out, making it an iconic landmark. It’s no wonder that it’s so famous.
Thanks to its stunning location, people from all over the world come here to capture breathtaking shots of the Milky Way above the church.
Stargazing at Lake Tekapo: My First Milky Way
When the sky is clear, you have a chance to enjoy an incredible view of the stars.
It was the first time in my entire life that I’d seen the Milky Way, and the countless stars left me absolutely speechless. I successfully ticked off one of the items on my bucket list.
Can You Swim in Lake Tekapo?
I actually went swimming in Lake Tekapo!
You can swim in certain parts of the lake, but not everywhere. Make sure you check the signs before getting into the water, as some areas are off-limits to swimmers.
If you’re planning to go swimming, have a look at the official Takapō Regional Park information and check the water quality information on LAWA before you go.
I have to say this: you might as well dive in where swimming is permitted. You could feel a sense of spiritual energy afterwards!
Tekapo isn’t just about the stars. It’s a place that surprises you at any time of day. You’ve got to see it with your own eyes!
If you’re heading towards Mt Cook, you might also want to stop at Lake Pukaki. It’s another beautiful lake that’s well worth a visit!
