Giants of Mandurah: My Hunt for Three Giant Sculptures

AUSTRALIA
Capturing one of giants

While I was in Perth, I heard there were six giant wooden sculptures scattered around Mandurah, south of the city.

My curiosity kicked in, and I decided to go looking for them.

It sounded a bit like a quest from The Legend of Zelda, wandering around trying to find something hidden.

The sculptures were created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo using recycled wood.

I managed to find three of the six giants during my time there.

Case 1: Parklands – Is He Laughing at Me?

The first giant I visited was hidden away in the bush at Parklands.

If I remember rightly, it took me around an hour and a half to walk there from Lakelands Station. Quite a long walk!

When I finally found him, I was surprised by how enormous he was. Even his foot looked about as big as me.

I climbed onto his arm to take a photo.

Looking at his face, I couldn’t help thinking he was sneering at me. Doesn’t he look as though he’s making fun of me?

Case 2: Wannanup – A Rather Shy Giant

The second giant was sitting on some rocks beside the water, holding what looked like a musical instrument.

He seemed rather quiet, almost as though he didn’t want to draw attention to himself.

That was the impression I got from his expression and the way he was sitting.

He was smaller than the first giant, but still enormous.

I walked for around 30–40 minutes from the nearest bus stop to reach him. Taking a photo together was a little tricky because of where he was sitting.

Case 3: Halls Head – A Giant Making a Spirit Bomb?

The third giant was sitting on a hill overlooking the ocean.

The moment I saw his pose, I thought of Goku from Dragon Ball gathering energy for a Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb).

It looked as though my energy had been drained and become part of it!

The view from the hill was absolutely gorgeous, especially around sunset.

Unlike the giant at Wannanup, this one was sitting in a position that made it easy to take a photo on his lap.

There was also a bus that took me fairly close to the location.

Three Down, Three to Go

I wanted to find all six giants, but the other three were difficult to reach with the transport options I had at the time.

So I only managed to visit three of them.

If you’re planning to look for the giants yourself, I’d recommend checking their locations before setting off, as they’re spread out around Mandurah.

You can find maps and visitor information on the official Giants of Mandurah website.
