NEW ZEALAND
The View of Port Hills from the top

Are you looking for a challenging biking or hiking track with breathtaking scenery. Mt. Vernon Park can be the option. You can choose from a variety of routes. Each trail leads to the summit with majestic scenery. There are heaps of wild sheep in the park, too.
The rugged hills scattered rocks can be tiring. But, Many run or bike up and down. Just enjoy the activity!

A MAP

As shown on the map, there are diverse tracks to hike and bike. You can choose the best track according to your current fitness level. Each one leads you to the same lookout point, which offers the epic vista! These treks are so steep that you could get tired and take a break on the way. Don’t forget to bring some water due to there is no water refill station.

10. DRY RIDGE TRACK

I chose Dry Ridge Track and trekked a steep and rough route, scattered with stones. I had to take strides to go up sometimes. Be sure to watch your step! You will see a lot of grazing sheep on the hillside. The track ends up merging with the Rapaki Track, which leads to the summit.
With sweeping jaggy hills, It will keep capturing your attention throughout the hike!

2.RAPAKI TRACK

If you plan to bike up here, Rapaki Track is the one for you. Biking up the route is not as easy as walking up. It feels like it’s a bit gentle slope shared by both bikers and walkers. But the closer you get to the top, the steeper the track becomes. I saw some bikers struggling to pedal up there. They didn’t give up. I have big respect for them.

From the viewpoint

Every track seemingly entices you to the peak. This view is the reason I said it’s worth the sweat. The vibrant colours and breathtaking vista created by Lyttelton Harbour, hills and small islands, will grip your heart. You can forget about how exhausted you are from the trek. I want you to see the view while standing there.

WITCH HILL

You can approach Witch Hill from the peak. Be careful not to slip when climbing up to the top of the rock. I believe this is worth a little risk to your safety. You will surely feel a sense of achievement, wavering on the edge of the rock, gazing out over the magnificent park!

Plenty of sheep are grazing on the hillside. It’s lovely!

I spent a couple of hours completing the hike while taking many pictures. I haven’t been exercising that much recently so my back got sore after finishing the trek. Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable experience! 🙂
