A Journey to Christchurch’s Highest Point: Hiking Bridle Path to the Gondola

NEW ZEALAND
The view from the Gondola station

Did you know The Gondola Summit Station is the highest spot in Christchurch, located on the peak of Heathcote Valley. From there, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the entire city.
There are two ways for approaching the summit.
One is to board on the gondola, the other is to trek the Bridle Path. I chose to take the path in order to enjoy scenic views from the way.
When I finally reached the top, I found myself satisfied. Let me share how the trip was like and views I experienced.

The Christchurch Gondola

This is the Gondola Station where you can purchase the ticket and board the gondola. It’s accessible, as there is a bus from the city that takes you to The Gondola Station.
The ticket costs $44, which I found it pretty expensive.
So I gave up getting on it and decided to hike the Bridal Path instead.

The address: 10 Bridle Path Road, Heathcote Valley,Christchurch 8022
Open: everyday 9am – 6pm

The Bridle Path

The Bridle Path was the main route, connecting the port town of Lyttelton with the city of Christchurch. It seems that It has been used since 1850. The trail was so steep and slippery with loose stones that I got tired quickly and needed to catch my breath. The jaggy hillside and the view of the city from the path is picturesque. It took around 40 minutes for me to get to the top. The peaceful vista from there was a reward for the hiking.

Lyttelton

From the summit, there’s a way up to the gondola station. By this point, I ran out of my strength but whipped myself to keep walking for another half an hour to reach the goal.
When I finally arrived, I was blown away by the epic view. The fresh air was as though it was celebrating for my achievement. I couldn’t help gazing at the view mixed with the city, the mountains and the coastline. What an eye opener.

A Gondola
The view from the summit

There’s a souvenir shop and a cafe that you can relax after climbing. I was going to take the gondola to go back to the base. However I wasn’t able to find the ticket reception so that I had to walk back down the trail. What a pain in the neck!

I can highly recommend making time for visit this place once!! Honestly, It might not be worth paying for the gondola. I found it is better to sweat, hiking the way, looking over the beautiful city and nature. Whether you take the gondola or hike up the Bridle Path, I am sure you can enjoy the spot!
