The view from the peak exceeded my expectations. It was utterly fabulous. I couldn’t help but pause and take in the stunning scenery for a while.
Roy’s Peak is located just a 10-minute drive from Wanaka. The view from the peak is referred to as one of the most wonderful panoramic sights in the world, and it’s something you shouldn’t miss. You might have seen the summit photo on social media, but nothing compares to seeing it with your own eyes.
The hike is challenging. The track is steep the entire way up and it can take around 6-7 hours return. But the promise of an extraordinary view at the top, and even along the way, makes it well worth the effort. If you are confident in your fitness, you should give it a go
The Walk
I was short of breath almost immediately and began to question whether I could manage another 3 hours of climbing. I nearly gave up right at the beginning. On the way up, I passed hikers who were descending after watching the sunrise from the peak. That gave me a bit of strength and helped me picture myself reaching the summit.

I had to stop frequently to catch my breath and regain my energy. My legs were close to cramping . The views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding landscapes gave me a boost and kept me going.
The First Summit

I reached where I thought was the top, The view I’d expected was there, but in fact, it was far more stunning in real life. A deep-blue lake, expansive hills, sweeping mountain ranges stretched out in every directions.
I was overwhelmed by the dramatic terrain, shaped by glacial movement over millions of years. Without a doubt, it was the most impressive view I’d ever had. I already felt a huge sense of achievement.
But I knew this wan’t the true peak. I still had another 30-mintue walk ahead of me. Brutal.

The True Peak

Holy moly! I was left speechless. The panoramic view was jaw-dropping. I didn’t want to get up for a while. I just stood there in awe. The hike had been very tough and exhausting, but the view was utterly worth it. When I looked back at the path I’d climbed, I felt both relieved and proud. I truly felt I’d earned that moment.
The Descent
After taking a well-earned breather, I began the long descent. It felt like I was walking downhill forever, but I was surprised by how fit I was after making the walk. Though, I found it was way more easy to go down on return leg, It still took me 2 hours to reach the base.
Now that I’ve done it, I’d love to see the view again, but I doubt I’d do the climb a second time. It was the perfect one-off challenge.
If you visit Wanaka, I highly recommend hiking Roy’s Peak at least once. I believe it’s one of those views you must see before you die!
