Let’s be honest. Tokyo and Kyoto are amazing, but they are also super crowded with tourists. If you are looking for a place where you can escape the busy three major metropolitan areas like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, see how locals actually live, and find a peaceful vibe, Takayama (飛騨高山) is the perfect choice.
To be frank, international travelers actually found out how great Takayama is before Japanese people did! But honestly, you won’t really understand how amazing it is until you actually come and visit.
I used to live right near Takayama Station, and I walked around the Old Street and the station area over and over again. And you know what? I never got bored. Not even once.
Let me share why this wooden mountain town completely stole my heart!
The Magic of Walking in a Town Built of Wood

The best thing about Takayama is the architecture. There are no high buildings here. It is not a “grey forest” made of concrete, it is a beautiful town made entirely of wood. Just being here makes you feel so relaxed and peaceful.
Like I said, I walked these streets so many times, but every single time I walked, I saw something completely different!
On your first walk, you might just see the big picture. But on your second and third time, you start noticing tiny things you missed before. Your eyes naturally catch something new—like a cute little souvenir shop or a sake brewery. You’ll find yourself saying, “Oh! Was this shop always here? Let me check it out!”

Walking around here is just so much fun, and your feet feel naturally lighter.
You don’t even need to spend money to enjoy Takayama. Just breathing the fresh air and exploring the streets on foot is more than enough to have an amazing day!
The Stunning View of the 3,000-Meter Mountains
If you walk up to a slightly high ground anywhere in the town, you will be amazed by the view. You can see the beautiful Hida Mountains (the Northern Japan Alps) right in front of you. It really makes you realize that Takayama is completely surrounded by mountains on all four sides.

The air here is so crisp and clean. And if you visit in the winter, the snow-covered mountains are so beautiful that you can honestly just stand there and watch them for hours without getting tired.
Delicious Local Food and a “Dangerous” Sake Experience
Because the town is surrounded by these massive mountains, we get incredibly pure, clean river water. I am 100% sure that this amazing water is the secret behind why Takayama’s food tastes so good! It’s also why there are so many fantastic local Japanese sake brands here.
Speaking of sake, I tried a local cloudy sake called Hida no Dobu (飛騨のどぶ), and it was so delicious!

It has an incredibly rich flavor and a very strong, punchy sweetness from the rice. To be honest, your very first sip might feel a bit too strong, and you might go “Whoa!”. But as you keep drinking, your mouth gets used to it. Once that happens, it goes down so easily that it’s actually a bit scary! It’s definitely a unique taste that people will either love or hate, but it is super addictive. You should definitely try it!
Quick Travel Tips for First-Timers
If you are planning a trip to Takayama, please stay for at least 4 days and 3 nights ! Taking a slow walk around the town, breathing the fresh mountain air, and just exploring is the true way to enjoy this place. I stayed here for three months, and every single time I went outside, I felt so happy and fulfilled.
