From the city centre of Christchurch, about an hour’s cycling can get you to a nice spot to visit. So I cycled to Sumner Beach and Scarborough Beach this time. In Christchurch, separated cycle lanes are equipped on the roads, making it easy to know where to ride safely.
The way to Sumner Beach is very simple, as you only need to cycle straight along the road leading to the beach.
Sumner Beach
It is a large white sandy beach with calm waves. When you reach Sumner Beach, you will want to go up Cave Rock and see the view of the entire beach. You can catch a glimpse of Scarborough Beach as well. Cave Rock allows you to go inside. There are some restaurants around here, so it is a good idea to take a break with some coffee and ice cream.
Scarborough Beach
I got the impression that the beach is small but suitable for children, with playground equipment. There is plenty of grassy area to chill out and drink coffee. With Scarborough Hill right in front of the beach and a clock tower standing there, the combination creates a brilliant view. I struggled a bit to find the best place to take pictures.
On the way there are many places to rest, like restaurants, bars, coffee shops. You can go accordingly. You will see hills, cliffs, Moncks Bay, and Avon Heathcote Estuary other than the beaches. I enjoyed cycling as the view changed by the minutes. As a destination for a cycling trip, it is worth it!
